A simple question, but a powerful one. We read to change our lives, gain knowledge,  teach our future generations. Reading gives us the opportunity to connect with the past and our present, and just maybe give us hope for a better future.

Books are uniquely suited to helping us change our relationships to the rhythms and habits of daily life in this world.

We can’t interrupt books, only ourselves while reading them. They are the expression of an individual author. Each writer speaks to us, thoughtfully, one at a time. They ask for our attention. They ask us to briefly put aside our own beliefs and prejudices and listen to someone else’s. You can rail against a book, or the author, you can scribble notes in the margin, but you can’t change the words on the page

Books or words in books have order, they are fixed, it is the intentions of the author to give you an argument, establish premises, so you can understand their conclusion . Hopefully you will slow down, savor the words, and ponder their meaning.

So, in this busy age of ours, slow down, read a book, read to a child, or write a book that helps make this world a better place.
